I Sent 5 'Titanium' Pans to a Lab. Only 1 Was Real
We bought five pans marketed as titanium from five different brands and had an independent lab test the metal. Four turned out to be aluminum or stainless steel with a thin titanium-based coating, not solid titanium. Only one pan was actually made of pure titanium all the way through.
That's not an accident of one bad batch. It's how a big chunk of the titanium cookware category is built. The word titanium on a box can mean the pan is titanium, or it can mean the pan has a coating that contains some titanium, usually titanium dioxide, sprayed or baked onto a cheaper base metal. Both get to use the same word on the label.

Why the word titanium on a label doesn't guarantee much
There's no rule that says a pan called titanium has to be made of titanium. Cookware brands can call a pan titanium-coated, titanium-infused, or titanium-reinforced and still be selling you aluminum or stainless steel with a spray-on layer that contains a small amount of titanium dioxide, the same white mineral used in paint and sunscreen. The base metal underneath does all the actual work of holding heat, resisting warping, and reacting (or not reacting) with your food. The coating is mostly a marketing decision.
Even claims that sound official, like FDA approval, get misread. The FDA doesn't approve cookware materials the way it approves drugs. It sets rules for what can safely touch food, which is a different, much lower bar than confirming a pan is made of pure titanium. What we did
To see how common this actually is, we bought five pans from five different brands, all marketed as titanium cookware, all in a similar price range for the category. We sent each one out for elemental testing using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, the standard method labs use to identify what metals are actually present in a sample and in what ratio. XRF doesn't care what the box says. It reads the metal.
What the lab found
Four of the five pans came back with a base metal of aluminum or stainless steel. Titanium showed up only in a thin surface layer, consistent with a nonstick coating that had titanium dioxide mixed in, not a titanium pan body. One pan came back as solid titanium, matching what was printed on the box.
None of this means the four coated pans are dangerous. It means four out of five buyers who thought they were paying for titanium's specific properties, like scratch resistance and long-term durability, were actually buying a coated pan with a titanium-sounding name. That's a different product with a different lifespan, and it should come with a different price tag.

Coating vs. core: why it changes how the pan actually cooks
A coated pan behaves like a coated pan, no matter what mineral is in the coating. It needs a bit more oil to release food cleanly once the surface starts to wear, the same way any nonstick pan does over time. Warping is another tell. A thin aluminum core heats unevenly and can bow or dish out under high heat, especially if it's dropped on a hot burner while wet. If your titanium pan has already warped, it's a strong sign the core underneath the coating is aluminum, not titanium. Why this matters if you bought titanium to get away from coatings
A lot of people move to titanium cookware for the same reason they moved away from traditional nonstick in the first place: they want fewer questions about what's touching their food. That's a reasonable thing to want. PFAS, a large family of synthetic chemicals used in many nonstick coatings, has been studied by the EPA, the FDA, and the NIEHS, and all three have published information on how these chemicals show up in everyday products, cookware included.
The problem is that buying a pan labeled titanium doesn't automatically opt you out of that conversation. If the titanium is just an ingredient in a nonstick coating rather than the pan itself, you haven't necessarily changed what's on the cooking surface, you've just changed the marketing around it. The only way to actually sidestep the coating question is to buy a pan with no coating at all, where the cooking surface is the metal itself.
How to check if a titanium pan is actually titanium
You don't need a lab to do a basic sanity check before you buy or while you still have a receipt.
- Skip the magnet test. Both titanium and aluminum are non-magnetic, so a fridge magnet won't tell you anything useful here, despite what you might have read.
- Ask for third-party test documentation. A brand that's genuinely using solid titanium should be able to point you to independent lab testing, like an SGS report, not just a claim on the packaging.
- Check the warranty length. Coatings wear out, so most coated pans carry short warranties. A brand backing a pan for life is making a bet on the material holding up, which is a much easier bet to make with solid titanium.
- Look at the price relative to the category. Solid titanium is harder to manufacture than a coated aluminum pan. If a titanium pan is priced like basic nonstick, that's a signal worth noticing.
