Is PFAS in air fryer baskets dangerous when you cook?

Perfluorooctanoic acid was a processing aid used to make fluoropolymers, and American manufacturers had it out of nonstick production by 2015. Every mainstream coating has been free of it for years. So what does that line tell you about the film in your own basket? Almost nothing, because a PFOA-free basket can still be sprayed with PTFE. These are the labels worth reading closely:

Coated baskets vs bare metal baskets
Strip the spray away and the alloy underneath behaves differently in a fast moving hot air stream. Food browns well on bare steel or titanium and it grips harder, so you oil the surface and give it a minute of heat before anything goes in. - Tilt the insert under a bright lamp. A sprayed finish shows an even matte film that stops in a visible line below the rim. Bare metal keeps one sheen from floor to rim.
- Wipe the floor ridges with a damp paper towel and look at the towel. Grey or black transfer means the coating is shedding.
- Email the seller when the page stays silent. If nothing comes back, treat it as PTFE, since that is the category default.

When a scratched or flaking basket needs to go
